Content Design

U.S. Bank

Shield design system

U.S. Bank’s design system needed a comprehensive site for its reusable components and documentation, in order to provide a consistent digital experience.

Component design

I collaborated with a team of React developers, designers and A11Y experts to develop more than 20 new components, including form inputs, tables, buttons, calendar and date picker, to be used by designers creating new digital experiences for U.S. Bank customers. These components brought a more consistent user experience for customers.

Design documentation

Being part of the design process gave me an intricate knowledge of each component’s behaviors, and I wrote documentation for each of the components we developed and many others. Design and technical documentation covered when and how to use each component, a description of its behavior, content guidelines and best practices.

Developer documentation

Our internal development documentation site, lacked organization and did not have many of the features React engineers needed to build experiences.

Working with a team of React developers, I conducted internal user research and designed the information architecture for a new documentation site.

U.S. Bank mobile app, 2024-present

In fall 2024, we needed to refresh our digital experiences, which are used by more than a million customers around the world, and make experiences more consistent between online banking and the app.

Dashboards

Our team conducted moderated user research sessions with more than a dozen participants, to identify areas for improvement in both the app and online banking. We used these research findings, along with business requirements, to create initial designs for new dashboards. As the content designer on the mobile channel, I collaborated with designers, developers and other content professionals to write clear, engaging content for these new experiences.

Winter 2017

About UMD page, winter 2017
About UMD page, winter 2017

When I began this project in 2017, UMD had a collection of pages in its main navigation. Each page had a list of links, but was missing substantive content and visual interest. The content and structure evolved as the institution moved to a new CMS platform and reassessed its goals.

About UMD, Spring 2018

We needed an “About” page that would represent UMD to prospective students. User testing and best practices told us we needed to initiate a conversation with prospective students that answered their most pressing questions in a way that was clear and readable.

I created a new page to:

  • Funnel users to other pages on the UMD website, such as admissions.
  • Highlight UMD fast facts and unique selling points
  • Provide general information about campus for current and prospective students, such as maps, directories and academic schedules.
  • Establish a sense of place, with messaging and engaging images/videos.
  • Help prospective students see themselves at UMD
  • Answer current students’ questions about what UMD is like.

Spring 2021

When we made the switch to a new version of Drupal in 2021, it was time to overhaul the pages in our main navigation again. This time, our strategy was to refine our previous goals while simplifying the content to make it more scannable and taking advantage of the features in our new university-wide design system. This resulted in an improved entrance rate and bounce rate.
